Industry Defined Problem
INTRODUCTION
FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PUNE, WE THE STUDENTS OF SINHGAD COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AT EXCELSIOR’08 PRESENT YOU THE CHENIGMA – INDUSTRY DEFINED PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM STATEMENTS HAVE BEEN GIVEN BY NATIONAL CHEMICAL LABORATORY (NCL), PUNE. SO GUYS SCRATCH OUT YOUR GREY MATTER AND BRING OUT YOUR ENGINEERING SKILLS AND COMPETE WITH THE BEST MINDS. THE PARTICIPANTS ARE EXPECTED TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM AND WILL BE JUDGED ON THE BASIS OF INNOVATION AND METHODOLOGY.
PROBLEM 1:
NITROBENZENE IS TO BE CONVERTED TO ANILINE USING CATALYTIC HYDROGENATION PROCESS IN PRESENCE OF Pt-Pd CATALYST. THE LABORATORY CONDITIONS FOR THE REACTION ARE:
REACTOR VOLUME=100ml
BATCH TIME=3 HOURS
SUBSTRATE CONCENTRATION IN ANY ORGANIC SOLVENT IS 50%
CONVERSION WITH RESPECT TO NITROBENZENE IS 100%
SELECTIVITY WITH RESPECT TO ANILINE IS 100%
USING BASIC CHEMICAL ENGINEERING PRINCIPLES SCALE UP THE PROCESS FOR COMMERCIALIZATION.
PROBLEM 2:
FORMULATE AND DESIGN A SUITABLE SYSTEM FOR ABSORPTION AND DESORPTION COLUMN NETWORK. THE SYSTEM IS ABSORPTION OF CARBON DI OXIDE (20%V/V) FROM THE MIXTURE OF HYCROCARBONS (METHANE, ETHANE, PROPANE AND HIGHER GASEOUS HYDROCARBONS, 80%V/V) AT A PRESSURE OF 50 ATMOSPHERES IN A SUITABLE SOLVENT. IT IS TO BE FOLLOWED BY DESORPTION OF CARBON DI OXIDE UNDER VACUUM (AROUND 250 mm Hg)
