B.Sc (MICROBIOLOGY)
Q) What is the scope of Microbiology?
Microbiology is the basic science necessary for food and Pharmaceutical
industry. It is also required for Medical laboratory technology
working in pathology laboratory for biotechnological industry
too.
In academics or research there is tremendous scope for Microbiology.
It is a base of biotechnology , bioinformatics, cell biology,
molecular biology, genetic engineering. The graduation and post
graduation in microbiology opens up all these avencies.
Q) What topics are taught in Microbiology?
In Microbiology we teach our students Medical Microbiology genetics,
enzymology, immunology, fermentation technology, food &
dairy microbiology and Agricultural microbiology.
Q) Can a student start his/her career immediately after graduation?
Yes, Certainly if the specific requirement is there a student
can work in pathology lab, micro-chemical analytical laboratory
or in pharma industry like medical representatives etc. But
usually we advice our students to go for master degree. So that
they can start their career at higher level.
Q) How tough the subject is?
Microbiology is not a tough/difficult subject only thing is
that the subject is introduced at F.Y. level. The students don’t
learn it at junior college level like physics, Chemistry, Biology
and zoology. So they have to put little more efforts to grasp
this subject. The subject is very interesting as it is concerned
with day to day life.
Q) Will you please explain how it is concerned with day to day
life.
Microorganisms are responsible for several infections. Right
from the common cold, cough to severe tuberculosis all these
infection are caused due to microorganism either bacteria or
viruses.
The antibiotics which are used to treat these infections are
also made by organisms.
The fermented food products routinely eaten up in restaurants
like idli, dosa, uttappa are made up by the activities of microorganisms.
The curd which is made everyday in our house is due to the bacterial
activity.
The toothpastes we use are for removing microorganisms from
mouth. The soaps are used to remove normal flora of skin. So
right from morning to night microorganisms are either helping
or harming us.
Q) Is it necessary to have mathematics at 12th std.
It is not mandatory to have maths at 12th std. but it is preferable.
Because of some mathematical equations, biostatistics problems
are to be solved. So basic knowledge of mathematics is essential.
Q) In which stream student can do masters after doing microbiology?
After doing B.Sc.(Microbiology) student can do M.Sc Microbiology,
Biotchnology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics etc.
