Title : Effectiveness of music therapy on communication skills of autistic children Abstract : Autism is a developmental disability, significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication of children. Childhood Autism is a subgroup of Pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). The key construct is the ‘Triad of impairments’ which affects: - Social interaction - Language and communication - Behavior and imagination that can be identified through examination of early development and current presentation. Autism has proven to be a particularly tough disorder that is difficult to treat: largely because autism is a syndrome and the neuropsychological etiology is essentially unknown. So it makes difficult to treat from a pharmaceutical standpoint. This situation has created a demand for non-pharmaceutically based treatments, some of these alternative treatments include: strict dietary changes (i.e., gluten-free diet, hyperbaric treatment, vitamins and supplements), Neuro-feedback therapy, occupational therapy (sensory integration therapy), physical therapy (brushing). One additional therapy for children with autism that is becoming more prevalent is Music therapy. Researches has shown that music with a strong beat can stimulate brainwaves to resonate in sync with the beat, with faster beats bringing sharper concentration and more alert thinking and a slower tempo promoting a calm, meditative state. Also, researches have found that music can bring lasting benefits to your state of mind, even after you’ve stopped listening. Some of the researchers also found that music training enhances the same communication skills needed for reading and speaking. With a keen curiosity of the Investigator and experience of working among autism children gave thought that ‘music therapy’ will help autistic children to improve - Communication and social interaction - Interrupt pattern of isolation and social withdrawal. - Enhance social emotional development - Enhance appropriate and integrated perceptual and motor development - Facilitate creative self expression. So the autistic children will have communication and other growth and development appropriate for their age groups. View PDF File |
